Lighting with Reflector Bulbs
In recess downlights and track lighting systems over the years the most common bulb used is the reflector (R) or bumped reflector (BR) are made of "frosted soft glass" with a intergrated funnel shaped reflector. They are available in several sizes and wattages in two basic patterns, spot and flood bulbs.
They are the most economical type of directional bulb, but they are the least energy efficient. The initial cost is inexpensive but they are the most costly to use. Not only in energy usage but they illuminate the area poorly.
They produce a warm diffused illumination. Well suited for general ambient and subtle directional illumination. They were designed to illuminate by pushing out, in a more controlled directional beam. Preventing heat build up in fixtures with a reflective mirror coating on the back.
You might want to check on the newer energy efficient upgraded halogen reflector bulb with the same soft len as the standard reflector.
